Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)

NDT Operatør som utfører MT

Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) detects surface flaws in ferromagnetic materials, providing quick, clear indications of cracks and damages.

Magnetic Particle Testing is a method used to detect surface defects and flaws just below the surface in ferromagnetic materials. This makes MT a good choice for inspecting, among other things, carbon steel in industry, process plants, and structures.

How the method works

By magnetising the area to be inspected, any cracks or discontinuities will disturb the magnetic field. When magnetic particles are applied, they gather in these areas and form clear indications that the inspector can evaluate.

Typical applications

  • Welds
  • Pipes and process equipment
  • Lifting and load-bearing structures
  • Machine parts and components

The method is especially effective at detecting small surface cracks, fatigue fractures, and mechanical damage.

Advantages

  • Fast and efficient method
  • High sensitivity for surface defects
  • Can be performed both in the field and workshop
  • Requires minimal preparation
