Penetrant Testing (PT)

Penetrant testing (PT) is an NDT method used to detect surface-breaking cracks and defects in non-porous materials.

Penetrant testing, also known as liquid penetrant inspection, is a method used to detect cracks, pores, and other surface defects in materials that cannot be magnetized. The method is well suited for the inspection of stainless steel, aluminium, and other light metals in industry, processing plants, and constructions.

How the method works

A penetrant liquid is applied to the surface to be inspected. The liquid penetrates into surface-open defects by means of capillary action. After removing the excess penetrant, a developer is applied which draws the penetrant out of the defects and makes the indications visible for inspection.

Typical applications

  • Welds
  • Pipes and process equipment
  • Machine parts and components
  • Pressure-loaded parts

The method is particularly well suited to detect fine surface cracks, pores, and leakage points.

Advantages

  • Simple and effective method
  • High sensitivity for surface defects
  • Can be used on many types of materials
  • Suitable for both field and workshop use
