Radiographic Testing (RT)

Radiographic testing (RT) is an NDT method that detects internal volume defects in materials using X-rays or gamma radiation.

RT is used to detect internal defects and volumetric flaws in materials by means of X-ray or gamma radiation, providing clear documentation of discontinuities.

Radiographic testing is a method where radiation is sent through a material and recorded on film or a digital detector. Differences in material density and thickness cause internal defects such as pores, slag, and lack of fusion to become visible on the image. RT is used both as conventional radiography (film) and digital radiography (DRT), and is well suited for inspection of welds and castings.

How the method works

A radiation source is placed on one side of the object, while film or a digital detector is positioned on the opposite side. As the radiation passes through the material, it is attenuated differently depending on density and defects. The result is an image showing internal structures and any discontinuities.

Types of radiographic testing

  • Conventional RT: Uses film for image capture
  • Digital RT: Provides faster results and easier storage and analysis

Typical applications

  • Welds
  • Pipes and pressure vessels
  • Castings
  • Components requiring documentation

The method is particularly well suited to detect volumetric flaws such as pores, slag inclusions and lack of fusion.

Advantages

  • Detects internal volumetric defects
  • Provides permanent documentation (film or digital images)
  • Good detail reproduction
  • Suitable for quality control and traceability
