Visual Testing (VT)

Visual Testing (VT) is a fundamental NDT method used to detect visible surface defects and irregularities on materials and structures.

Visual Testing (VT) is the most commonly used NDT method and is used to detect visible surface defects, deviations, and deficiencies on components and structures.

Visual testing, often called visual inspection, is a method where surfaces and details are examined with the naked eye or with the help of aids such as cameras, mirrors, magnifying glasses, or endoscopes. VT is used on a wide range of materials and is often the first step in an inspection, both in production, maintenance, and overhaul shutdowns.

How the method works

The inspection is carried out by direct or indirect visual observation of the area to be checked. Good lighting, the correct viewing angle, and any optical aids are essential to identify deviations such as cracks, deformations, corrosion, or inadequate workmanship.

Typical applications

  • Welds
  • Pipes and process equipment
  • Structures and load-bearing elements
  • Machine parts and components

The method is well suited to detect visible cracks, deformations, corrosion, wear, and irregularities.

Advantages

  • Simple and cost-effective method
  • Can cover large areas quickly
  • Requires little equipment
  • Can be performed both in the field and workshop
