Motor Hotel

Our Workshop

Storage of electric rotating machines

Proper storage of a spare machine is critical to prevent unwanted storage damage and ensure that the machine is actually ready for use when needed. We offer our customers this peace of mind for all sizes and types of electric rotating machines through storage options at our motor hotel in Askøy (Bergen). The machines will be placed in a proper storage environment and regularly monitored in accordance with our recommendations, which include shaft rotation and insulation resistance measurement.

Advantages of using a motor hotel

  • The machines are handled by a professional operator with specialist knowledge of electric rotating machines
  • Avoid unnecessary deterioration or storage damage
  • Connection to standby heating (by agreement, if available)
  • Machines are placed in the correct storage environment (dry and temperate) and away from secondary vibrations from other parts of the floor, building, etc.
  • Maintenance plan carried out by motor technicians
  • Fast processing of urgent motor requests (24 hours)
  • Possibility of quick inspection and spin test before shipping to location
  • When rotating the rotor, care must be taken to avoid damaging the white metal in the sleeve bearings.
  • VCI Preservation method (rust inhibitor) that can be used to great advantage on overhauled equipment that is planned to be stored as a reserve.

Inspection and verification of engines upon arrival and before shipment to customers

All machines to be stored will be checked upon arrival, where a service-aged machine is normally checked and overhauled before storage, while a factory-new or overhauled machine is normally only checked before storage. Often, when a spare engine is to be installed on site, time is an important factor, especially in the event of an unplanned incident. Proper storage provides additional assurance that the machine is in the expected condition and ready for use, and we also offer an inspection of the machine before collection and shipment to the location.

Condition verification of machines

Depending on the history of the machine, it will be checked on arrival by performing a visual inspection and winding analysis (electrical measurements) as well as a spin test (without load) to check for vibration and temperatures. If any issues are found, an overhaul will be offered to optimize the condition, and if the machine is found to be in good condition with no deviations, it will be recommended to preserve the machine (VCI) and place it in the storage area. The measurement results will be stored for future comparison in our maintenance system, together with information about the location and maintenance log during storage for the machine.

When a machine is to be removed from storage, a control measurement will be performed and the machine will be prepared for collection. If an extended inspection is desired, this can be performed by appointment.

Machines arriving for storage will have different histories and starting points (e.g., been in operation prior to arrival), and it will be necessary to assess each case individually to determine whether the machine qualifies for condition verification pricing or whether a complete condition check is necessary.

We offer a 24/7 service for shipping engines stored with us. If necessary, the engine can be shipped within 24 hours
